Juliano Maranhão is an associate professor at the Law School of the University of São Paulo, a founding partner of Maranhão & Menezes law firm, and a co-founder of the Lawgorithm Research Association (a non-profit organization dedicated to research in artificial intelligence and law), along with professors from Poli/USP and IME/USP. He is also the founder and Director of the Legal Grounds Institute, which focuses on projects related to law and innovation.

He earned his doctoral degree from the Law School of the University of São Paulo, completed post-doctoral research at the Faculty of Computer Science at Utrecht University, and was a visiting professor at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (2016-2019). He has also been a visiting researcher at the University of Miami, Leipzig, and Maastricht. He is an associated researcher at the Center for Artificial Intelligence USP/IBM (C4AI) and the Recriando Ambientes Artificial Intelligence Center (IARA). He is a Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany) and a collaborating researcher in the Computable Law Project at the University of Bologna.

He served on the Executive Committee of the International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (2019-2023) and received the Donald Berman Award (2001) from the same association. He organized and served as the Local Chair of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law- ICAIL 2021 and has been appointed as the Program Chair for ICAIL 2025. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Artificial Intelligence and Law Journal and the Executive Committee of the biennial Deontic Logic and Normative Systems-DEON conference.

He was a member of the Senate's Jurist Committee in Brazil, tasked with drafting the AI Regulatory Framework (2022), and currently serves on the National Council of Justice (CNJ) Committee for revising the regulations governing AI use in the courts (2023-2024). Since 2023, he has been a member of a CNJ committee on the use of personal data in the extrajudicial sector. He previously served on CNJ committees overseeing the implementation of the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in the judiciary and extrajudicial sectors, contributing to the development of Provision 134/2022. He was also part of a CNJ committee regulating access to mass data in judicial processes (Recommendation 73/2020; Resolution 363/2021).

Between 1997 and 1998, he worked as a legal advisor to the presidency of CADE. He also worked as a partner at two pioneering and leading antitrust law firms in Brazil, Magalhães, Ferraz e Nery Advocacia, from 1998 to 2008, and Sampaio Ferraz Advogados, from 2008 to 2021.
